Co-location of lightning leader x-ray and electric field change sources

چکیده
[1] Using an eight-station time of arrival (TOA) network composed of NaI(Tl) scintillation detectors and wideband electric field derivative (dE/dt) antennas covering approximately 1 km on the ground, we have located both the sources of X-ray emissions and electric field changes produced during the leader phase of both downward negative natural and rocket-triggered lightning strokes. We show that the sources of X rays and leader step electric field changes are co-located in space within 50 m and that the located X rays are emitted 0.1 to 1.3 ms after the origin of the leader step electric field changes. X-ray bursts associated with leader steps in cloud-to-ground lightning
[1] X-ray and electric field measurements were made during five nearby negative natural lightning strikes in north central Florida during the summer of 2004. The observed X-ray emission typically was detected 1 ms before the first return stroke, during the stepped-leader phase, and had energies extending up to a few hundred keV. The X rays were produced in discrete, intense bursts emitted in co...
متن کاملRegistration of X-rays at 2500m altitude in association with lightning flashes and thunderstorms
Electric fields and high-energy radiation of natural lightning measured at close range from a mountaintop tower are discussed. In none of the 12 negative cloud-to-ground upward flashes were X-rays observed. Also no energetic radiation was found in one negative upward leader at close range (20m). In the first of two consecutive negative cloud-to-ground flashes, X-rays were detected during the la...
متن کاملElectric and magnetic fields and field derivatives from lightning stepped leaders and first return strokes measured at distances from 100 to 1000 m
[1] Using electric and magnetic field and field derivative sensors arrayed over an area of about 1 km, we measured the close fields of stepped leaders and first return strokes in 18 negative cloud-to-ground lightning flashes at distances to individual sensors ranging from about 100 m to about 1 km. We present examples of the close field waveforms along with their statistical characterization as...
متن کاملLightning Properties Inferred from Measurements of Very Close Electric Fields
Lightning properties including dart -leader charge density, return-stroke propagation speed, dart -leader electric potential, and dart-leader propagation speed, inferred from current and close electric field measurements are presented. Although all estimates presented here are based on rather crude models, they are generally in remarkably good agreement with independent measurements and/or theo...
متن کاملRF and X-ray source locations during the lightning attachment process
[1] Using an eight-station array of electric field derivative (dE/dt) sensors and colocated NaI X-ray detectors, we have obtained 3-D RF source locations during the leaders and attachment processes of three first strokes initiated by stepped leaders in natural cloud-toground lightning and one stroke initiated by a dart-stepped leader in a rocket-and-wire triggered flash. Stepped leader and dart...
